Is it one fixture or the whole house?
Start by checking where the pressure is low. If only one faucet or shower is weak, the problem is almost always at that fixture. If every faucet in the house is weak, the cause is in the main supply, the pressure regulator, the pipes themselves or a leak.
Common causes of low water pressure
Clogged aerators and shower heads. Hard Texas water leaves mineral scale that narrows openings. Soak them in vinegar or replace them. If the fixture cartridge is scaled, our faucet repair and shower repair services can restore flow.
A partially closed valve. After any plumbing work, check that the main shut-off and meter valve are fully open.
A failing pressure-reducing valve (PRV). Many homes have a PRV near where the main line enters. When it fails, pressure can drop throughout the house.
Hidden leaks. A leak in the main line or under the slab diverts water before it reaches your fixtures. Professional leak detection and slab leak detection can find it.
Old galvanized pipes. Galvanized steel corrodes from the inside, narrowing the pipe over time. The long-term fix is repiping.
Main water line damage. Shifting clay soil and aging pipe can crack the service line. See our water line repair service.
Water heater issues. If only hot water pressure is low, sediment in the water heater or a partially closed valve may be the cause. Our water heater repair team can flush or repair it.
When to call a plumber
Call a plumber if pressure dropped suddenly, if you notice a wet spot in the yard, if your water bill jumped, or if you see brown water along with low pressure. Those signs point to a leak or failing pipe that will get worse over time.
Quick Answers
Why did my water pressure suddenly drop?
A sudden drop often means a leak, a failing pressure regulator or utility work. Check with neighbors, then call a plumber.
Can a water softener lower pressure?
A properly sized softener should not noticeably reduce pressure. An undersized or clogged one can.
